NAMM 2017 Yamaha MONTAGE Firmware Update to Version 1.5

Unread post by Saul » Thu Jan 19, 2017 5:41 pm

It’s been a year since we unleashed MONTAGE onto the World! We’re now pleased to announce a new firmware update – version 1.5 containing some exciting new features….

52 new Performances have been added, which are stylistically mixed and show the Motion Control Synthesis Engine very well.
5 new Effects, including a new enhanced Rotary Effect.
Performances can now also be assigned to a Favorite Category
New display-options in the GUI additionally increase the overview.
Super Knob and Assignable Knobs can now also be “un-linked” from one another
Scenes can be changed via MIDI Control Change events
The entire memory of the MONTAGE can be saved in a single ALL file as a perfect backup means.

A thorough explanation of the update can be found in the latest Music Production Guide.

Apparently the 1.5 firmware is not available until next month :(

No sign of additional sound engines, then?

No, not a chance Derek. I did ask about it before NAMM but they said they had no plans to introduce another sound engine any time in the future, which I think means "ever"

I'm not sure they could do it without a hardware upgrade. You know how Yamaha put things together? I have not seen inside a Montage but I am sure they left space on the board for something else further down the road but of course that won't be any good to existing Montage owners.

Still will be interested to see what this 1.5 firmware does once they get the link up. Not sure why they included links in the press release that don't work. Perhaps it will go live later and then I can try it and let you know what wonderful treats they have added...even though they listed them ;)

There was a hint on the release of the Montage that there might be additional sound engines, but I was always sceptical about that, and Yamaha sound generators are usually custom chips. That's where Korg had the right idea moving to computer based platform with microprocessor now being fast enough to run code that used to have to run on custom DSPs.

I agree. Korg did it the right way but Yamaha have been like this for as long as I can remember so comes as no surprise to me that we are where we are.

I had hoped they would at least give us a cut down Montage but doesn't seem like that is going to happen either.

There won't be any additional synth engines for it by software update, as it would require a computer chip to run them.

The only way to get more engines would be to do the same thing as in the Kronos i.e. plug a PC into the USB port, assuming Yamaha actually make a softsynth package available.

Ensoniq: SQ2

Long Gone: Far too much gear from the 80's and 90's that went out the door for £££! Moved to soft synth city instead.

Actually there's a good chance of that happening at some point, whereas budget Kronos is unlikely without deliberate artificial limitations.

Oh I'm sure Yamaha will release a cut down Montage at some point but I think we are a good way off from it yet.
