New to the EX5R - can you help?

Unread post by Ifee »

Hi,

My dad has given me his EX5R synth, and I am brand new to it - I've never used a synth in my life! I have read through the manual and am struggling to select different elements within voices. The manual says that I can select the elements with the cursor keys/wheel in edit mode, but it doesn't let me move past the "osc-pitch-filter-amp" box. As it is an EX5R, there are no 'bank' keys, so I can't select them that way. Can anyone help???

Thanks!

Hi,

Nice gift! I wish my Dad gave me presents like that! :D

In terms of navigation, there are two things you can do using the basic navigation.
  • Cursor up, down, left, right allows you to navigate to a parameter on a page
  • To change edit page (which I think is you want to do), then press the [F1] soft button to tab through the pages. Other soft buttons will allow you to select sub edit pages if available.
You then have the challenge that the EX5R is missing the EX5 Bank/Program select buttons, which act as page short cut/element select and mute buttons in edit mode.

I have sold my EX5 and recently got an EX5R (I had to keep the EX5 sound!), but have done no EX5 editing for a while, so I was curious on this, so have gone to have a look...!
  • You can directly jump to an edit page by pressing and holding the SHIFT key (the one to the left of the soft function keys below the display). The bottom line of the display will change to the page names. Simply select the corresponding soft button.
  • To use cursor Up/Down to change the element you are editing, then you need to be on the OSC page for that to work, and select the element before you move onto other pages (there may be other ways, but that is the only one I have found so far).
  • You can mute/unmute elements by pressing the SHIFT button and the relevant numeric button (e.g SHIFT+2 for element 2). The element numbers on the left of the display will be shown in a smaller size when they are muted. See P44 of the manual

Thanks a lot, I'm able to get it to work now. I'm also interested in how to turn a glissando into a slide - I looked under 'portamento' in the manual, but it only has a setting within performance mode, which I don't know how to work yet. At the moment there are 127 voices in performance mode, but they all play the same sound as the Natural Grand which is the first voice in P1. None of the effects or edits seem to change the sound. Is there a way to do the slide/gliss thing in normal voice mode, and how do I get performance mode working?

Thanks!

Hi,

The EX5 voices do support Portamento. You can find the settings in the [F7]: CTRL page. See P103 of the manual. If you do not have a paper copy of the manual then you can get a copy from the Yamaha Manual Library.

The Portamento mode in Performance allows you to set it differently for each part.

It sounds like you do not have any performances loaded other than a complete bank of INIT PERFs. We can remedy that by loading some other data

First ensure that you save off your current settings using DISK SAVE ALL to a floppy drive (assuming you do not want to lose your current contents!)

Get a copy of the EX5 Factory Demo Set from EX5Tech UK. Unzip, and you will have four folders for the original disks. Copy the contents of the disk1 folder to a floppy disk.

On the EX5, put the disk in. Press the DISK button, and use the soft buttons to navigate to LOAD / SYN. Load the FactSet1.S1Y folder. This should give you the EX5R in its factory condition including all of the factory Performances.

You can of course check out the DEMO1.S1A file using DISK LOAD ALL. And of course use this to demo all of the contents of all the disk folders in the download. Do note that an S1A file will overwrite your utility settings. If either you or your Dad changed the MIDI receive channels away from CH1 then you will need to reset it in Utility mode after loading an S1A file.

And of course there is a wealth of other files on EX5Tech UK to explore.

Another site to check out is MarcE Music which is home to all of MarcE's excellent EX5 patches, and also home of the musical tributes that the community did 2001 to 2005, which produced a diverse range of music to showcase the EX5.
