EX5 Parts Resources?

The EX5 features a unique Extended Synthesis system which incorporates a number of advanced tone generator technologies. AWM2, AN, FDSP and VL. The EX5 is one of the best keyboard Yamaha ever produced.

Looking good, and the EX5 is still great sounding, which is why when I sold my EX5 boards, I had to get an EX5R to keep the sound.

The EX5 is still more powerful than the Motif range - the EX5 AWM2 engine has far more options, and of course you get AN, VL and FDSP - the EX5/7 is still the only synth in the wold with FDSP and for that reason alone I will always have one.

The only thing it misses is FM (shame).

The Motif range bored me to tears (although I did get an ES Rack as an “expander”). They sound good, but of little interest to people who like their synths.

As Saul says, the Montage is a far better bet, and a sign that Yamaha have found at least a little of their Mojo again. I am awaiting to see what comes next.

That's what an FS1R is for!

Indeed. That’s why I have one, along with Nord G2 Engine (patchable 6 op FM), Korg Kronos MOD7 (patchable FM and their equivalent of SY RCM), SY99 (AFM), TG77 (AFM) and Montage (FM-X or 1/2 an FS1r...). So plenty of FM options in my studio :)

The FS1r is special though, and quite rare these days because as a product it bombed - the world was not ready for an 8 op FM engine with formants programmed through an interface that was harder to navigate than a DX7! And sadly it was the failures of products like the EX5 and FS1r to sell well, that Led to Yamaha playing it safe for a far too long with the Motif range.

I have often said before, I don’t use the FS1r a lot, but when I want some “secret sauce” sound to add some movement that does not get in the way of other sounds in a mix, then it is often the FS1r that I turn to.
