Studio is complete again! (Pics included)

Unread post by rocknpop »

Wanted to share a few pics of my updated studio with the keys I wanted. Thanks to Derek and Alex (“Floyd”) I’ve got an EX5/7 setup (#inspiration). You can also see the ES7 which will be the master controller since sadly the keybed of the ex5 is a bit clicks and no service shop wants to take this task (ridiculous). What you don’t see are the JV-1080 and the Triton Studio 88.

Lastly, I got the EX7 for under $300, in my mind for parts only, but it turned out to be in better shape than expected (only a cracked cheek and the corresponding metal is bent, but it’s ok). The knobs are on the way along with the washers.

So in summary, I ended up with these Yamaha boards:
- Yamaha ES7 with the PLG150 DX and AN cards
- Yamaha EX5 with the SCSI, AES/AEB, and maxed out memory (but need to replace the floppy drive, probably with a Gotek emulator?)
- Yamaha EX7 Barr bones bit perfect keybed and definitely spare parts for the EX5 as it continues to age

Here are a few pics:

Very nice setup you have there! ((i)) ((i)) ((i))

Is that a Kemper Modelling Amp I see tucked in the left hand corner?

Nice Studio! Some nice boards, and the ES with the DX and AN PLGs will still be a very good powerhouse (even with the faff of programming PLGs), and then with some classic Korg and Roland to add to the sonic palette.

The last time I saw an EX5 and EX7 together was when Igor Khoroshev was in Yes! He had an EX5/EX7 and two AN1xs for good measure (I think he had a Yamaha sponsorship for that tour!).

Sadly I cannot find a clear shot of his rig on the web now, and the site his keyboard rig used to shown quite well on is dead!

This is the best I could find via Wayback machine! https://web.archive.org/web/20010407210 ... /gear.html

The EX7 is in the top left, and the EX5 is the top tier board on the right.

I am thinking of redoing my studio before the the Winter sets in. Since getting my Prophet X, my AN1x has been languishing unused in the corner, which is criminal. And I have another board in mind, where to make space for it I will need to find space for my SY99. Whilst I have always said I only have space for four boards in my studio (which has lasted for 16 years!), I think I have a plan now that will allow me seven..... :D

Derek - sounds like you have more than enough keys to choose from! Wondering what your master keyboard is if you have one?

Currently my Yamaha SY99 is right in front of me when I am at my DAW screens, so if I move it it, I will lose that and will end up with two five octave boards in front of the DAW screens, but I have my Montage 7 just to the right, so that will probably become the master. But there is a method in my madness :) I want to get a setup that I may gig as a solo act and have those located as I would gig them.

Not having a master right in front of the DAW is not the end of the world, as I can run Cubase remotely via its remote app on the iPAD.

Ha! I know... this is actually a problem, I need to revert back to being a minimalist to get more creative (as crazy as that sounds).

I can only play one instrument at a time... so there is a constant prioritization between synths (Motif or the EXes) or the 12 guitars I have (through the Kemper)... not to mention the instruments I have in Ableton Live.

However, part of the reason I reverted to this setup, mostly hardware synths, is because I get inspired faster. Albeit, this is limited by the way that I can edit patches/voices in all of these old synths! The Motif with the AN and DX expansion is great but boy it's hard to edit the voices in an intuitive way, so I mostly end up layering voices from the DX with newer ones. And for the AN card, I don't really use it too much, so I may just turn to the EXes to do that job (unless I need to layer something, which likely are the AN Pads).

Anyway... yes, too many toys, too little time to play with all of them.
