EX5 Firmware Versions

Unread post by Sayersweb »

I've been Googling trying to find info on the EX5 firmware versions. Thought I had the latest version, but just discovered that I don't, and I'm wondering if it is worth upgrading.

This is the ROM versions that I have:

Main: 1.0A 98-12-26
TG ROM: 1.11 99-01-27

Apparently, the current versions are:

Main: 1.11 01-10-24
TG ROM: 1.14 01-09-18

Does anyone know what the differences are and whether it is worth upgrading to the current versions?

Thanks!

Sayer

You have a pretty late version that I used for a long term with no obvious issues.

So unless you have noticed any issues, I wouldn't worry about trying to update.

Erm - wasn't 1.0A almost the very first OS firmware version or is that just Hex speak for 1.10? Agreed that anything after 1.09/1.10 is relatively trivial (1.10 was for mLAN support only).

OK, strike that, panic over - I found my early note, Yamaha did indeed go from 1.09 to 1.0A for some reason although they didn't do that for the TG firmware sequence.

Herewith the only fixes I have been able to find post-1.09.

V1.09 to V1.10 (1.0A)

Update the Main ROM to V1.10 when mLAN-EX is installed on the EX Series.

Symptom in V1.10 addressed in V1.11

When the following procedure is executed, different names will appear on the "Performance Name".
1. Select the "Performance" which is included the ìVL VOICEî
2. Push the "EDIT" SW.
3. Select the "Common Parameter" and "Rev".
4. Push the "Copy" on the Display.
5. Different names will appear on the "Performance Name".

Symptom in TG ROM addressed in V1.14

When the following procedure is executed, The Poly Note of the EX5/5R is reduced by half.
1-1) Select the Init Perf.
1-2) Select a Voice which includes FDSP to the Part 1.
1-3) Select a AWM Voice.
1-4) Set the Individual Output to Ind3, Ind4, Ind5 or Ind6.
2-1) Select the FDSP on the Voice Mode.
2-2) Change the mode to Performance Mode, and select the Init Perf.
2-3) Set the Individual Output to Ind3, Ind4, Ind5 or Ind6.

Is there a place to download the latest firmware? Is there information on what EPROMS are needed for such an update?
Just got into the EX5, and looking for any information available. Enjoying it so far.

Thanks,

Darryl

See here:

viewtopic.php?f=29&t=7844&start=15#p40919

The Eproms needed (4 pcs) are 27C800 or 27C160 - but 'be warned' - they have 42 pins each... 8O

Best,

I have 3 EX5s with OS/TG 1.0A/1.06, 1.0C/1.11 and 1.11/1.14, respectively :

• my 1.0A EX5 works fine as a solo keyboard and as a master controller, and I never felt the need to upgrade
• my 1.0C EX5R works fine as a multitimbral player with its internal sequencer
• my 3rd EX5 had a *very* old OS (1.01) and I upgraded it to 1.11 (latest OS) because of MIDI timing problems, but I do not like the changes in some preset names (the patches are the same, but in TG 1.13 they changed some names probably for copyright reasons).

And they all sound outstandingly

Well - if you could name the 'old' patch(es) name(s) (which you like) and the 'new' patch(es) name(s) (which you obviously don't like) one could 'rename' those patch(es) and burn (a) 'special edition' ROM(s) even on a TG V. 1.14 for 'personal use'... 8) 0-)

Yeah, a 'special edition' ROM(s) on a TG V. 1.14 for 'personal use' would be great Image
____

With the original names you know immediately what kind of sound they are, not with the new names. I find that rather unpleasant Image

A few examples (original name / new name) :

Pf: Suitcase 73 / Valise
Pf: Superstition / Wonder Why
Or: Procol Harum / English
Ba: Stingray / Fingered
Ba: Precision / Flatwound
Ba: Miller / Slapit

To have a full inventory of the changed names I would have to go through the original and the latest versions of the EX5 data list.

That said, those new names don't bother me too much, as the 1.11/1.14 EX5 is my back-up keyboard and I still have the original names on my main EXes

IF you once may find the time AND you're in the mood would you do me the favour and find out which patch names 'were to change'..? A list like this example (with only the names to change) would be fine:

If I'm in the mood I'll change a set for my personal use...

Yes, I would

The fastest way to do that would be to copy/paste the patch numbers and names from the 'EX5 Data list' pdf into an Excel spreadsheet and to compare them. Unfortunately it seems only the latest version of that document is available for download from the Yamaha website (not the 1st version).

My EX5R Main and TG are both 1.05. Can anyone confirm the MIDI latency is eliminated or at least improved by upgrading to 1.11 and 1.14? It is pretty awful when polyphony increases. At one point I thought I was able to reduce latency when using more MIDI channels to divide the load, however that does not seem to be the case in subsequent tests. Thanks in advance!

IIRC there were improvements made around version 1.0C/1.0D however I have never seen any official documentation to confirm. There is anecdotal information which indicates improvements in MIDI timing around those versions and it is definitely a good thing anyway to bring such an old version up to date. Of course, it makes sense to upgrade to the latest version.
