Yes it's OK but now we have an unfortunate Subject: DX7 firmware upgrades (all models). If people read down this far they will be OK ;-)

and welcome to the Yamaha forum! Glad you've found us here.

What you have to do is:

0.1: DISCONNECT the DX from main power and open up the synth by unscrewing the lower housing. Remove the screws holding the main pcb in place (you may have to disconnect some cables - you can mark the connectors by using some different color pencils... makes it easier to put them back where they belong when reassembling the DX!

1. locate the firmware eprom on the mainboard. It is IC23 and located nearly in the middle of the pcb.
It is already socketed ((i))

2. remove the firmware chip. You can take a small flat screw driver and gently pry the chip out of the socket - from the small sides of course! Please note to where the chip's notch is pointing BEFORE pulling the chip out! This is IMPORTANT!

3. get an eprom (27C512) with the firmware v. 1.9 already programmed (burnt) in and put it in that empty socket - again take care of the notch's direction and make sure that all pins align correctly with the socket - and gently press the chip down into the socket. Allow the chip to settle onto the socket.

4. Reconnect all cables, put back the mainboard (use one or two screws...) and then power up the DX. To enter test mode: While holding down [EDIT], press [16], and then press [32]. Have a look onto the display - it should read as shown here (pic 4):
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=8205&start=0#p44326

Be aware that your internal sounds may get lost while entering the test mode - if you want to keep them you have to save them first (to a RAM module or to a computer via MIDI).

If all is good reassemble the entire DX and have fun 8)
Hope this helps...

Best,
Miks

Hey Miks, thanks a lot mate! You explain it splendidly.

I will order the chip then (hope it be well burnt and works) Then will follow your instructions. Will come back to post my progress.

Cheers!

Viele Dank, Miks, ich werde dich auf dem Laufenden halten.

Hope after the surgery the keyboard transmits up to 127 velocity data.

I have a question, the seller says: -This EPROM can NOT be fitted into a DX7II-D DX7II-FD all-together with an extension card like E! Grey Matter for DX7II-

What this means? :|

The E! Grey Matter card is an expansion card - as well as the SuperMax - those cards have their own firmware eprom onboard. As far as I know those cards will get inserted into the socket that (normally) carrys the DX firmware eprom - which has to be pulled to install that kind of expansion pcb's...

Hi,

here's some info...

Firmware Revisions (for DX7IID/FD) (ROM XC314):

Version 1.1 - released: 12-1986
Version 1.2 - released: 01-1987
Version 1.3 - released: 01-1987
Version 1.5 - released: date unknown (Japanese market)
Version 1.6 - released: 04-1987 (has built-in test program)
Version 1.8 - released: 12-1987 (servicing ROM XC314006)
Version 1.9 - released: 07-1988 (servicing ROM XC314007)

But I've never seen any detailed informations about the differences between those versions... 8O

Hello forum
Interesting, I have a DX7IIFD. Probably the Eprom is defective. He does not become more active. All lights are lit and the display is lit. Then he stopped.
The battery is not. I have already changed.

@ Oxygen: Where did you get the eprom? Can you give me the supplier?

Sorry for the translation is from Google translator. I speak German.

Hello forum
Is there no one here who can give me an answer where I can refer to the EPROM for my DX7IIFD?

Please see my post here:

http://www.yamahaforums.co.uk/forum/vie ... 713#p47526

The Eprom needed is a 27C512 which is a common type - still available nowadays from several sources at the internet - i.e. via eBay...

I still have some of these 'in stock' - you never know...

Hi Mikes
Thank you for your answer. I need a programmed Eprom for the DX7IIFD.
I have already seen your instructions. I'm not sure if the problem really is with Eprom. It can be assumed, however, on the basis of the starting process.
Have you already programmed EPROMS? What would you sell?

All - thanks for the inspiration to upgrade the firmware in my IIFD from 1.3 to 1.9! Everyone's posts have been very helpful in understanding the process. I have an EPROM programmer and some blank 27c512 EPROMs I will use to upgrade a few of my keyboards. Would someone here be able to send me the 1.9 binary file for the IIFD? Many thanks!
