Many thanks, Miks, it worked! Successfully upgraded from 1.3 to 1.9.

The test program showed "29v" which I think means that the battery is at 2.9v not 3.0v and needs to be changed. Not bad for 30 years, though!

After the DX7-II work is completed, I'm off to update my E-mu Proteus/1, which still has the v1.00 firmware as I received one of the first units that shipped.

Excellent - glad you've got it working (Y)

If the battery voltage drops below 2.8 volt the battery should be replaced. But if you replace it now you're good for another 20 years or more...

The DX has a coin cell (CR2032) with solder tags and is soldered onto the mainboard.

If you're going to replace the battery I strongly recommend to use a battery holder - makes it easier to swap the coin cell in future should the need arise. I've done this 'surgery' to all my synths that had 'soldered' batteries.

Here's an example of what holder I used:

https://www.reichelt.de/Batteriehalter- ... ANGUAGE=EN

Now you can go for a 'common type' CR2032 coin cell...

Thanks, Miks, I think I'll give it a try soon. I was able to desolder a CR2032 holder from an old PC motherboard. The pins are wider (20mm, which seems to be standard) than the holes on the DX7 logic board (wish I would have measured while I had it cracked open) but I'm thinking I could either add a short wire to each pin to make it work, or use longer wires to run it to a more convenient location as I've seen in a post on this site.

This may solve many 'battery holder placement issues':

Cool, I just ordered 3 (minimum order) for only $4.50 with free shipping. If you don't mind, I have a couple of additional questions:

1. Would you recommend using pins like this or something else to connect to the DX7 logic board? I might just try scrounging something from an existing motherboard or I/O card I have lying around.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-pcs-40-Pin-2 ... 2248284546

2. Did you mount yours on the same side of the board as the original battery, or to the back so you don't have to take the logic board out to change the battery next time?

Again, I really appreciate the assist on this one.

Well - If I were using one of these battery holder pcb's I would take (a) short piece(s) of massive wire - let's say 0.6mm cross section (don't know how much that is in inches...) I suppose that type of wire will give more mechanical stability to that kind of 'construction... but with a pair of flexible wires you're free to mount it elsewhere. Maybe a splash of hot glue can hold it in place...

I mounted the holders at the same place the battery was soldered before - if you mount it 'to the back' there may be the risk of a short-circuit due lack of space between the battery (holder) and the backplate... 8O - to be checked... 8)

Ideally you want a firm pin of some kind because of the weight and interaction with the battery. The stronger the better. Otherwise use wires and mount the board someplace nearby like on the case using double-sided foamy tape or velcro.

Hi guys... please can someone send me the 1.9 BIN file for a DX7IID?
Can you tell me if the BIN file for DX7IID is the same or not for the DX7IIFD?
Thanks
Stef

Hi guys!
Is there any info about DX7II firmware changes, other than routines possibility or the date of release?
Miks, could you also send me a bin file with 1.9 firmware for DX7IIFD? For some reasons, maybe it's not so bad idea to make a dump with all existing firmware bin files, don't you think so?
Thanks!

I probably should have checked first, but it appears that not all units had firmware chip socketed. It looks like mine (Dx7ii-fd v1.6) was soldered directly to board. I'll end up getting a socket and putting it on the board for my replacement eprom, but just wanted to share in case someone else was going to upgrade thinking it would be a simple chip swap.
