Just got an SY-55 that has been around the block...

Unread post by TheRealAnubis » Mon Apr 15, 2013 3:07 pm

Hi,

I just purchased a working but very well used SY-55. Firmware 1.06, 08-JAN-90.

I was looking for a MIDI keyboard to use with Logic 9, but all of the ones I could find used locally were either cheaply made or flaky in some way. I discovered this SY-55 for a great price, even it its well worn condition, and read up on the MIDI capabilities and it seemed to fit my needs perfectly. I already have an SY-77 and an SY-99, but they are really big and I don't have any place to set them up at this time. The SY-55 isn't tiny, but it is a lot smaller than the 77 or 99. Plus, one more synthesizer can't hurt, right?

I have downloaded the user manual and the service manual, and have read through the service manual and ran many of the tests (all passed). I didn't do the keyboard test because I can't press the low C.

The low C key is physically broken, and it looks like one of the G keys needs replaced as well. I have a couple of questions on repairing this keyboard.

I have two keys that sit higher than the others, and they seem to have a lot more tension on them compared to the rest of them. I haven't had the key assembly out yet, but is it possible that the springs are the wrong kind or something?

I removed the broken key and retrieved the tension spring and the broken plastic parts of the key from inside the keyboard. I glued the key back together, but it looks like it's been glued before, so I'm planning to buy a couple of new (or used) keys.

I am used to tinkering/repairing all sorts of things, but I haven't been very deep inside a keyboard, so I'm also looking for any tips/tricks from someone that has replaced keys, etc. on the 55 - possibly even a take-apart like I've seen for the 77 and 99.

Thanks for your help!

The SY55 is AWM only, not FM.

AHHHHH, that's right! That's even better! I don't have any AWM synths! :)

Original post corrected.

You mean apart from the SY77 and the SY99?

The SY55 is basically a SY77 without the FM synth part.

Ahhh, well. I was hoping to get some assistance with my original questions. Point noted. I'm not an expert, I just like these synths.

Sorry can't help you with those as I have never repaired a keybed, but there are a few regulars on here who have experience with that, I'm a bit surprised they haven't replied yet, maybe your questions are too buried inside your long initial post so they didn't see them.
