NOT Good News . . .

Unread post by parametric » Wed Aug 10, 2011 4:51 pm

Hi Guys,

THIS http://fusioneer.proboards.com/index.cg ... ge=1#16520 from Riffbeeper in the FusionClub forum.

The service info I have does NOT give details of the pcb mentioned (# 9-79-0361)

Below is a pic I took of the PSU while I had the Fusion open for RAM upgrade
Fusion PSU.jpg
Fusion PSU
As I mentioned in the other forum - I believe some users have had burnout problems with the power supply - especially in the 6HD due to that board's "more compact" construction.

Perhaps those more cicuit-savvy could put together a heavier-duty one, but we will NEED the circuit details. Does anyone have a diagram of this pcb?

Best Regards

I hear about PSU problems but never experienced anything like this myself when I had my 6HD. It was well ventilated though. Sometimes there something to be said for an external brick ?

That's true, external PSUs are easy to replace, but it can be really aggravating if you have a lot of gear with them. Ever tried to plug 10 or 12 "wall warts" into two 6 outlet surge strips? Just for my computer, monitor, printer and scanner, there are 3 wall warts and I can barely get all four items plugged into a 6 outlet strip.

Hi Guys,

I have emailed my contact at IonAudio here in the UK concerning the Fusion PSU Circuit diagram. They appear to be doing tech support for the Fusion (such as it is) in the UK since Akai/Alesis got aquired by Numark.

They were very helpful with my E3 RAM upgrade queries - so I am hopeful for more of the same :)

Thinking about it a little, the absence of any details of the PSU circuit in the Service Manuals that exist may be due to the fact that Alesis outsourced that part - so the circuit is not theirs to give . . .

Perhaps if we can discover whose product it is, enquiries can be redirected there . . . .

Best Regards

Hey Guys,

I've just found this. There's no knowing how current it is, but they supposedly have it in stock.

Wonder what the final bill would be, inclusive of shipping/duty in the UK?

Indeed . . . .

Sadly, in my experience its always the way. The stuff REMAINS at the price they cost originally. Best example I remember was the replacement floppy drive (albeit motorised) for the Mac II series . . . . ~£120 if memory serves . . . . When a regular PC floppy drive was £6
ulp!

Isn't there a way to fix the old one?

In an ideal world I would say yes - provided the board itself is not damaged seriously.

Some folks have reported quite serious overheating/burning that has caused the tracks to lift from the board. In this case I guess it would be difficult to satisfactorily repair the tracking.

Not having the circuit diagram would make identifying components difficult - no one has it, as far as I know.

Possibly component values are silk-screened on the component side of the board, but the construction is very high density and you can't see the board-top too much, as a result.

Deconstructing an "old" one would be one way - but there's no guaratees that all the info required would be revealed - or even there. Add to that, the least soldering done to the board the better . . . .

We really need the circuit diagram.

If we had that, then someone with the necessary knowledge could possibly upgrade some components on it to give it some additional capacity such that its not not operating quite so near its maximum, under normal operating conditions. Then it SHOULD run cooler - and longer . . . .

Best Regards

As well, while diagrams should give you the the info you need, sub-assemblies like you are talking about sometimes are changed in design one or more times during the production lifespan, sometimes even from different vendors with different parts.

I have contacted one USA & 2 Canadian Alesis official service centers, they have the technical specs for the power suppy, but are not allowed to release the information. They can repair the power supply if needed.

I'm not surprised but it's a bit of a stiff attitude given the maker is apparently no more. Wonder if 'specs' includes schematics?

I really can't see any common sense reason not to release the schematics to Fusion owners unless the same psu is used in something else and if it is then tell us what it is so we know where to find replacements :)

Hi Jesse,

I think Jima said that was an EX5 PSU - just for comparison of layout with my pic of the Fusion PSU. . . .
