Alesis Fusion PSU . . .

Unread post by parametric » Thu May 25, 2017 12:54 am

Following Jesse's revlation about no more PSU's here: http://promusicproducts.com/forum/phpBB ... 161#p36158

I sought out InMusic here in the UK today . . . [InMusic Brands (Europe) Tel. 01252-896-040]

The phone was answered directly by a Human (Y) (I forgot to note his name)

I explained that the part - (Alesis Part no. 9-79-0361) and (Akai Part no. SPSHA33R4-058N) are for the SAME PSU which is

common to the Alesis Fusion (6HD and 8HD) AND the Akai MPC5000 . . .

(A number of other parts ARE common too)

He confirmed the commonality AND the fact that they had stock - so I ordered a "spare" for both my Fusions . . .

With carriage and VAT they will be £80.03 Each - which is amazing - considering I've seen prices Stateside of $145 - $175 for

ONE, probably plus shipping.

So I HAVE to report - excellent response and Service, here in the UK . . . . (Y)

NONE of that "Press one for a ten minute wait - press two to hear a list of ALL the products you're NOT interested in" CRAP . .

The PSU has been a problem area for the Fusion - especially the 6HD - together with reports of hot running, often leading to

failure . . .

The SSD upgrade does alleviate this significantly by lower power consumption and less heat produced . . .

So best advice is to put one by JUST IN CASE . . . .

I mentioned the apparent shortage at InMusic USA - and he claimed that spares are common across their three Primary MAIN

Offices - So I don't know WHAT is going on . . . 8O

Thanks for that info Chris. It's a shame that there were these issues around the psu in the Fusion. I never had any problems with mine and I "think" I had three of them, all the 6HD. It does get hot along that right hand side though so perhaps if I had kept them longer this may have become a problem. The 8HD of course has a lot more air around it due to the larger case.

Precisely Saul,

everything is more closely packed in the 6HD. The later PSUs were a (partial) redesign - sporting slightly longer "cooling fins" (on

one side at any rate) - though I always got the impression that it ran close to it's limit - and therefore ran hot . . .

This is why I feel that the SSD upgrade was GOOD for the PSU - as current demands are lower than a HDD - therefore it runs

cooler . . .

That has to help too, with a gentler thermal cycle between "Uses" (Y)

Same problem with the EX5 PSU. Yamaha no longer sell replacements or repair them and neither do their approved UK repair company.

On the plus side the Yamaha A3000 sampler uses the same PSU (and SCSI) card, and you can pick them up for peanuts, which is what I did to resurrect my EX5 with failed PSU. The fall back would have been to purchase a 3rd party tri-volt PSU and get the drills and hacksaw out!
