In the end, I decided to go for the NewHaven Display, as the info on the TG77 upgrade thread mentioned that it's only marginally thicker then the original, which seems to be an issue on the TG77

So, I've just ordered two of the following (one for the TG77 and one for the SY99)

PS: A blue display for the EX5 would also be cool! :)

At $53 it's a rather expensive display that you chose but it shows love and devotion for the SY99, so you are forgiven. :D

A blue display for the EX5 won't be easy to find. Unfortunately Yamaha chose a configuration that puts the controller away from the actual display board. I do not know what it looks like inside the EX5. On the EX5R the controller chip sits on a PCB attached to the LCD at a 90-degree angle. On the A5000 the controller sits on the main PCB along with the CPUs, the DSPs, etc. A flat ribbon (similar to the SY85 floppy ribbon) supplies the signals to the LCD. It is basically an LCD without a controller we are after. That is in contrast to the DMF5005 equivalents of the SY-series where everything is on the same board.

Motif XF6, SY99, SY85, QS300, PSR1000, WX5, EX5R, A5000, TG500, TG55, RM50, QY700, QY100, QX5FD, MJC8, YDP2006, REV500, EMP700, EQ500U, MCS2, AW16G, Axiom Pro 49 and a few other things by Behringer, Evolution, Philips, Tascam, Technical Pro, Yamaha, etc, etc,... I wish I had time to use all this stuff; I am not even pro. :-)

It actually worked out comparable in cost to the others on the market as there was no additional postage charge when I ordered from Mouser, and the key factor was that the thickness of the display is only marginally thicker than the original, which I believe is an issue in the TG77. I remember on the SY77 that the display replacement was "an interference fit"!

I have to get some cool blue in the SY99 before the current dim display screws my eyes up! :)

And of course it would be criminal not to do the TG77 as well.

It's a shame about the EX5 options for a cool blue, but at least (touch wood) there are no issues with legibility of the LCD 12 years on.

I'm impressed with Mouser! I ordered from them on Monday, and had the Newhaven displays today. Now I need to do a Maplin order for the bits and pieces like connectors and ribbon cable!

It will probably be a few weeks before I do the upgrades, but it's nice to have the displays here ready.

I'll simply say that smart people don't pay $150 for a display like this. I could justify a few bucks over $70 by saying that it is a European thing, because it is sometimes difficult to find components at decent prices over there but that's ridiculous. Find a seller in China and get it for less than half that price. Find an electronics' vendor in the US and they will ship it to Europe for a total of no more than $100. But $150? Those that pay that much either don't have a problem making the money or they are desperate. But I would go with my first thought, they are simply not smart.

On the other hand Yamaha would charge $150 for that display too, so...

Why are going on about Europeans? That display was listed on ebay US by a seller from Longmont, Colorado, United States... Nothing to do with Europeans! :D

Right, I used them too... but they're selling backlight foils (among others) to replace a burn out foil. But at the moment we're talking about a complete LC-Display incl LED-illumination as a replacement for the complete old display...

The price for a replacement SY77 display from Yamaha was about (IIRC) £300 in 2008, which was eye watering and why I went for the Cool Blue on my SY77!

I've just ordered all the other bits needed for the upgrade, so hope to start with the TG77 the weekend after next......

Not sure if SY77 was ever used in Yes, so not a huge amount of Yes Patches for the SY (or not that I have come across).

Wakeman was a Korg and Moog Man. DX7 was probably used in some of the 80s material, and on "The Ladder" I can hear EX5 plastered all over it (Igor Khorshev had EX5/EX7 and two AN1xs on tour - methinks he had a Yamaha endorsement!).

The best thing I have heard Yes related on the SY99 is a song making use of the SY99 sampling to play "owner of a lonely heart".
