SY77/SY99 Floppy Drive Belt Replacement Guide

Unread post by Derek » Tue Nov 13, 2012 11:23 pm

Hi,

Whilst replacing the failed floppy drive belt on my SY99, I took some pictures and wrote a quick guide, which I hope may be of some use to others. It's quite an easy job once you have the belt!

You can find the guide on the following page of my xfactory-librarians web site.

Derek, this will surely help those first time belt changers, thanks for posting it! I've done it enough times on both the 77 and 99 that I could do it blindfolded I think.

I've done it twice now! :)

Display upgrades for the TG77 and SY99 are looming. I have all the bits now....

Thank you Derek for the tutorial!
I thought it was much more difficult than the real thing, without it, I would still have the unusable floppy (last year was still working, and I bought it in 1993!).

Actually, I wanted to see if floppy was working just with a common rubber band, and, strangely enough, it was!
At first attempt, drive was spinning, but it couldn't read the disk, so I took a looser band enough to strain not the gear, and voilà!

I made a paper gasket (but could have been of plastic) for the motor mast to prevent band to go out of the groove, and added a second band around the floppy gear to create a "virtual" groove for the first (so actually the gasket seems to be redundant).

Since then, I formatted 10 times a disk, loaded all SY99 sounds that I got, copied 1 disk, and everything seems ok, no strange noise (actually, it always was, like every floppy drive!).

Now my SY99 seems to work like the first day.

I'm glad the tutorial helped. Some people have had success with elastic bands, and it appears so have you! :) But I'd prefer to use the proper belt which will provide the right tension. I've done this fix on both the SY77 I owned, but sold, and on my SY99.

You're right Derek, elastic band is not the proper way to fix the drive, and it should be replaced by the original belt, and I'll do it in future.
I just have to record songs from some diskette I did in past, and probably I'll freeze the machine again.

I have also other questions and doubts about the SY99 maintenance, but I'll post them in the proper section.
