SY-99 power supply diode alternative

Unread post by msc1958 » Thu Jan 15, 2015 2:06 am

Help! I need the assistance of an electronics wizard. Would anyone happen to know if there is a replacement or alternate part that can be substituted for the 11ES4 diodes located on the SY-99 power supply circuit board? The 11ES4 is a difficult part to find/locate. BTW, I think that these are rectifier diodes. Thanks again, Mark :)

Looks like a 1N4004 should do the job but it may be physically bigger.

Brian,

Agiain, I thank you for another response. You have saved me a lot of "search and compare" time. If the 1N4004 is physically bigger, that would not present a problem as I have plenty of overhead and peripheral room on the edges of the circuit board. I may have to drill location holes, but that should not present a problem for Diodes 5 & 6. For those interested, here are the links to the spec sheets.

When it came to diodes either a 1N4004 or 1N4148 was substituted when we couldn't find the exact one! As my old boss used to exclaim on such substitutions: "It fits!". Same with transistors and valves, there were old perennials that used to get you going again, even if not the right spec. It could make the difference between doing something for a Customer and an impending deadline (possibly with degraded performance) and not doing something, and allowed you to soldier on until you could get the right part! :)

Derek,

Thanks for the encouraging post. I have ordered Motorola 1N4004 as the Vrsm was listed as 480 volts where the 11ES4 was listed as 600 volts. All the other specs between the two were exact or very close. As I was taught in engineering school, if you are within 10% plus or minus, you should be OK. 8O
