Since two weeks my SY99 had recently problems

The Yamaha SY99 is a synthesiser combining frequency modulation synthesis (branded as Advanced FM) and sample-based synthesis (branded as Advanced Wave Memory 2) and the direct successor to Yamaha's SY77/TG77

Since two weeks my SY99 had recently problems

Unread post by Camel2109 » Mon Mar 14, 2016 3:06 pm

Saying "Hello" to the Forum!

All 6 Batt's shows "replace batt"
(2x DM Boards, 4x Wave Expansion Board)
and the three Wheels are playing crazy.

If they are used, the sound is transposed one or two semitone higher and stays there. As long as I switch to another voiceprogram.

I opened the metal backcover and run the Test Program Menu.
Made the internal system check and everything is okay!
Batt (3.1V-3.2V), Wheels, Aftertouch, ROM, RAM, etc.
Playing with the wheels and aftertouch - everything is okay.

Once I mount the below metal cover, the errors are back.

But I can't see any broken or shortened cabel.
(All the Batt's are replaced few month ago and everything works fine.)

Maybe someone of you had the same error.

Greetings
Peter

Hi Camel2109 and welcome to the Forums . . . .

I'm not familiar with the SY99 (A Fine Board!), but we have quite a few users in here who can probably help you better . . . .

From your description, It sound as if the removable panel is pressing on something inside - (as the problem starts again, when you re-assemble it).

Can you see or feel anything stopping the panel locating correctly without you pushing it down?

Are the cards fully inserted.

If the cover is METAL, is there any chance that some inside circuitry is touching it, when you replace it?

In my experience, the batteries mostly last for YEARS, unless they have been inadvertently "shorted" out . . . .

The diagnostics are invariably "truthful" in what they report (in my experience). . . . So 3.1 - 3.2V is probably correct, since you replaced them recently . . . . .

DID THE PROBLEM ONLY START AFTER YOU REPLACED THE BATTERIES? - Perhaps try re-seating them?

Has the SY99 be "knocked" or "dropped", which MIGHT have dislodged something inside?

Hope that helps . . . . BTW - Your English is fine - and good enough for me to understand your problem (Y)

Best Regards

Hi. And welcome from another SY99 owner. If you take the metal cover off again, does the problem go away again? It does sound like a potential short. Check cables to ensure there are no exposed cores.

Hi Parametric, hi Derek,

many thanks for your replay.
I will check it at the whole weekend.
Without and with the metel cover screwed on it.
I think so, too. There's a hidden potential short and I can't see and measure anything.
I have only a multimeter

Best regards
Peter
