iWavestation

Unread post by Derek »

Well, Korg have done it again. They have just released the wavestation for iOS and very good it is to. Very nice user interface and the way it shows the wave sequences is interesting and the most visual I have seen.

Korg are definitely the one to watch these days with all of the keyboards, workstations, gadgets and iOS renditions of their classic synths

I have the wavestation on mac and pc so no need of it for me but I guess a lot of people are going mobile these days so it would be very useful in that context. Will take a look anyway....and yes Korg are definitely way ahead when it comes to things like this.

I'm away on business right now, so away from all my synths other than what I have on an iPad. So i got it on a whim and whiled away an hour before supper messing with it. Completely indulgent I know. Only disappointment is that it does not integrate wth Korg Gadget the way the iM1 and ODYSSEi do, but maybe that will come.

Come on Yamaha, where is your iAn1x etc?

I thought they released that a year or so ago (as part of their anniversary stuff) and it even was free.

Got it - thanks for the clue, tux! Quote "AN2015 features virtual analog modeling like the AN1x.". Downloading now, looking forward to exploring.

Yes, I forgot about that - a synth embedded in an anniversary document...... the logic of doing that has always defeated me. It doesn't sound bad, but it is clunky in the interface. It's designed for iPhone in portrait mode only - no good for me as I use my iPad in lansscape mode when I sequence and mess with the music apps, so I don't want to crick my neck by turning it 90 degrees to look at the big interface ;) but at least you can integrate it with Cubasis. It makes no use of iPad resolution, which is also a big turn off. If Yamaha repackaged it to be standalone and to make better use of the iPad screen, it would be much better, I would even be happy to pay for it. It is not quite an AN1x mind. Granted you get the extra oscillator. Perhaps I am being picky, but Korg are doing perfect recreations of their old synths, so why can't Yamaha. There is obviously a market there for it.

My main point though (as a long time Yamaha fan) is that Korg are stealing a big march by eagerly adopting the tablet market just as much as their main core instrument market. Just look at the sheer diversity of what they have from Gadget through to Kaoscillators and then the iOS synth range that integrates with Gadget - the iWavestation will as well, I have just learnt as there is a new Gadget update out to allow that.

It's funny. Up until two years ago, I was never a Korg fan. I am now. They seem to ben in a "purple patch" right now from the Kronos up at the high end, right down to £14 reproductions of their classic synths on iOS (and I guess Android as well?) and I think my ears have also gotten attuned to the Korg sound, which I never quite got before. That is not to say that I no longer like Yamaha. I do, well at least the old classics, but Yamaha appear to be a bit of a lumbering dinosaur compared to what Korg are doing right now. As a long time Yamaha fan, i would still love to see them rise to the challenge. They were great once. I cannot say that of them right now in comparison. My humble opinion of course....

From the few meetings I have had with Korg they seem to be a much tighter knit company right from the guys in Japan to the team here in the UK. They seem to work cohesivly as a whole and are not afraid to tread new ground and try new things. Yamaha on the other hand seem to be a collection of very detached divisions, one often having no idea what the other is doing. The HQ in Japan is very remote from other parts of the company and tends to just do things and not communicate very well to the regional divisions what it is exactly that they are doing. It causes a great deal of frustration for the team here in the UK...not that they would admit that but I know differently ;)

The ONLY thing that bugs me about Korg's rampant march through the land of apps is they completely ignore the desktop. Many of us don't want to create music on an iPhone or iPad. I have a beautiful 27" hi res screen in front of me. Why would I want to be poking around on a iPad? Roll on the day that iOS and Mac OS merge!

Some good points there. Korg as a smaller company are probably more agile as a result, but they will have less corporate resources behind them.

You are quite correct about the focus on tablets. There should be no reason why the same code cannot be targeted for a different platform.

To be fair to Korg, they do have pretty much most of what they have done on the iPAD as VST insttuments

The only one missing is the new Odyseei and the iWavestation has a much better user interface than the KLC one. But maybe they will reach back to the desktop as well with these new ones.

The Korg Legacy Digital collection for the mac, which includes the Wavestation and M1 sounds great but looks awful. It also lacks the functionality of things like iWAVESTATION. On the plus side Legacy Digital does come with all the Wavestation expansion cards, you have to buy them for iWAVESTATION :( I know we're not talking big wads of money here but still, the expansion cards should be included I think.

Mac OS is destined to merge with iOS at some point so eventually developers like Korg will only need to create for the one platform and of course that opens up a massive world of apps to desktop users :)
