photobucket holding pictures for ransom

Unread post by Buzzard » Sun Jul 02, 2017 9:39 pm

if you see this image instead of your uploaded photobucket image .......

Phuck Photobucket.jpg
Phuck Photobucket.jpg (14.82 KiB) Viewed 468 times

All you have to do is make a payment to photobucket, only $399.99 a year
and you'll get much more storage, that you'll probably never use.
But at least your images will again be allowed to enable 3rd. party hosting.

 Basically that means images shown here on Yamaha Forums are held hostage for ransom.

This may not have happened to all of us,
but those posting a lot of images, including me, are now NOT able to show pictures via photobucket,
unless we just pay up.

I decided not to, and deleted all my images, because there is no way, I'm gonna let a greedy site like photobucket,
having traffic with my images while holding me at gunpoint, to get my money.

The pictures seen before here on Yamaha Forums will return, but it will take quite some time to upload again from my computer.

Meanwhile, I'm mad as hell, whishing photobucket to simply dissapear. :/:

Peter

I can completely understand that Peter. It was an incredibly underhanded tactic by PhotoBucket. One that I sincerely hope backfired on them, although I have a feeling they will make a fortune out of this as so many people around the world will now suddenly find all their images are looking like the one above and a proportion will probably pay up.

Better to use your own hosting and link to pictures from there.

I'm still working out what will be the best way to let users upload photos to the site, apart from attachments of course. The issue with attachments is that the forum changes the stored file names to a random code so if as happened recently we have some issues it's not so easy to recover the images. They are there but no way of telling what each one is without viewing individual files...and that can take forever!

If you upload them to the server they will always have their original file name so they are easy to link to and easy to locate.

In view of this, I've just downloaded all the images I've been hosting there as a zip file, while I decide where to go to host them.

My pleasure (?), no, that isn't right is it?
It can't be a pleasure to have to report a spammer, can it?
...
Anyway.

The trouble is I've got 13 Meg of zipped images!
They include a whole stack of images from my MIDI tutorials site too.
Perhaps it's finally time to bite the bullet and host the images on my own site.

Nah, Ya!

Making sure that all my pictures at photobucket have been deleted, I finally deleted my account.

They give you two days before the account is finally terminated, which is about their only fair offer at the moment.

No going back though, and no regrets.

Yeah six images gone there. I images there are millions of these blank spaces all over the net now.

Hopefully he still has the images stored locally so it's just a matter of attaching them to the post in place of the photobucket links.

Quitting the bucket is somewhat difficult.

On July 3. I deleted my pictures and account.

There was a message that my account would be deleted/terminated on July 5.
Next to the message was a "Restore my account" button, but I'd never touch it.

On July 10. the account was still opperating, so I uploaded some pictures of guitars held by nudes.
Shortly after that, I got mail from them, probably a warning, but never read it, just erased it
Account still operational, so I uploaded some vintage porn, to offend the wholesome site.
That did the trick, as of Friday July 14. I was no longer to find, totally gone from photobucket.

It's actually a pity that one has to get nasty to end such a relationship. :(

On the good side, I thank Saul for sharing space, to restore my guitar topics and posts. ((i))
The work is still in progress, and I'll get there eventually.

Peter
