I am so glad to see this thread recently active! I too have a DX7II with Grey Matter mod that is not working. Replaced battery, load sounds from cart, sounds like robots and forgets patches after power off.

I am under the impression that the re-initialization process is tricky but I have not been able to find the procedure - found it for DX7 but not DX7II.

So I guess that I am asking for the same info as previous posters. If you could help me out, that would be great.

Thanks

I am so happy I found this for him!

So I am yet another one with a Grey Mater Response card on a DX 72IIFD… I, too, do not have the Grey Matter system disks.

This was my main instrument back in the day and I programmed hundreds of sounds for it… The whole setup really relied on the Grey Matter expansion as well. It would be a dream come true to be able to play on my old synth again.

Good morning Miks,
I purchased a DX7 IID with expansion E Grey Matter.
Unfortunately the instrument has a low battery and has lost all settings.
I replaced the battery, but I don't know how to restore the sounds of the Gray Matter card.
Can you kindly tell me how to do it?
Which files to use and which software to use to reload the original setup.
Thank you very much and best regards.

Hello,

I also have the Grey Matter installed on my DX7 ii FD. Seems the battery was changed and I will need reload the Grey Matter sounds, most of the Grey Matter patches are in various symbols. I do have the original cartridge that came wit the ii FD when new.

Can someone provide me the disk images of the Grey Matter kit?

I think I bricked my DX7IIFD Grey Matter E! board. I was trying to re-load banks after a battery replacement. I was prompted to "Load Without System" and I said Yes. Immediatly the screen went to 88.88 and all lights are lit red. I powered off and restarted, got the same results. Pulled the battery, restarted and got same results. Hitting any of the buttons does nothing. It acts like the the main memory was over-written and it can't boot up. Any ideas? Is there a way to reload the SYSTEM?

I apologize. User error. I did a bad job soldering the new battery on. It looked OK but it I kept thinking this could be the problem. So I listened to the voice inside my head and removed the solder / battery and it booted up properly. It was touching D4 whch is real tight up against it.

I very much appreciate everyone’s work and vast knowledge on this forum. Thank you.

Rick

That is great news Rick . . .

I guess you re-soldered the Battery so it doesn't touch?

My question may be the same or it may be different. I installed a Grey Matter board on a DX7 II. Everything is great except I'm at the last step.

The installation manual says:

"First load a RAM 4 Cartridge into E!'s four memory banks (see pages 5&6 of the User's Manual). Be sure to load WITH system."

These are no doubt some bloody stupid questions for those in the know, but here they are:

- what User's Manual? I can't find a Grey Matter User's Manual except on some very sketchy sites.
- So this is a RAM 4 cartridge with patches already on it? I don't have a RAM 4 cartridge, but I can get one. It won't have patches on it, presumably. So how do I get the patches onto it? By going back to pre-Grey-Matter state and saving them off by reinstalling U23?
- or am I just making this too complicated?
- or is it even more complicated than this? If so, how to proceed?

Thanks for your help.
