Unread post by RLMUSIC Project »

Hi All,

First song for 2021. A song by English Singer/Songwriter Peter Gabriel, which is about despair and encouragement to hang in there.

I made this video especially for people who struggled through 2020 and lost all hope, with special emphasis on transgender people. My partner's son/daughter is transgender Hopefully 2021 will be a better year. Keep fighting, never give up.

Performed on a Yamaha Genos keyboard - Key: G/Em
Style: 6-8SoulBallad - TimeSig: 4/4 -- Tempo: 48bpm
Multipads - VocalChords2

Best regards for 2021.

Sounds good to me.
I think that tone wouldn't be possible if not for the Yamaha!

I am intrigued as to how anybody could mistake an English Public School boy and ex-singer of THE quintessential English progressive rock band (that small band called Genesis) for being an Aussie?

Unless it's a ruse to get people to listen to your tune ;)

Unfortunately for me, the song is too iconic and featuring two of the best singer song writers ever delivering performances that rate amongst their individual bests, with virtuoso performances from luminaries like Tony Levin on Bass, that I can't bring myself to listen to covers of it. SO is one of the best albums of the 80s.

Hope others can take a listen.

@ DEREK

I stand corrected, my apologies. Peter Gabriel is indeed an English musician. Should have done my homework.

Richard

I applaud your attempt to cover this song and indeed you have been skilful to constrain it to a common

time signature ;) The original is replete with odd time signatures and intense use of "rubato" . . . . .

indeed, in the original at some points, there seem to be time signatures working against each other in the

same measure . . . :o

As Derek observed - it's an iconic Song . . .

I appreciate the sentiments behind it's creation - it must have been a LOT of work to get it to "make sense" in 4/4?

It was the words of the song that got to us. My partner's daughter has really gone through hell trying to be accepted by "normal" people. We were trying to encourage her to hang in there and not give up.

I simplified the song as much as I could but it was still a difficult project.

Richard

Absolutely Richard . . .

It's a great Song, especially the collaboration with the delectable Kate Bush.

I always respected Kate as she could PLAY her music as well as sing it . . . .

. . . coupled with Gabriel's inimitable Voice . . . . Just Great!

I actually used the version by Herbie Hancock with P!ink and John Legend as the model for my version.

Check it out - pure magic.

This, for me too, is an iconic song that accompanied me during the 90 days notice of redundancy from ICL in 1991.

When the amitiyptyline I was prescribed just produced worse side effects, this beautiful song accompanied me and gave some comfort.
How I wish Kate Bush could have been there to sing her sweet solace.

A little while back I looked around to see whether I could find the musical score, I never found a particularly good one.
But ...
I did find this MIDI file which, with a little tweaking to make it work with the Yamaha S-YXG50 VST inside SOL2, produced this.

https://app.box.com/s/6a0x4drbew4akc1efubvat7a6ts8np3q

The major feature, of course, was the bass guitar.
I can't claim credit for the file which came from a French web site, which I'll post a link to in due course.

So sorry, Richard, to post over you, I hope you'll forgive me.

P.S. The author is Thierry Leroy, his web site rppmf.com (a good opportunity to practise your French).

The major feature, of course, was the bass guitar.
If you mean the original, then that would be Tony Levin, one of the best bass guitars on the planet (in my top five) and lovely guy to boot. One of our best Chapman stick players, and inventor of "funk fingers" (little drum sticks you attach to you picking hand fingers, so you are "drumming" the strings).

If you have never seen it, the "Classic Albums" series episode on the making of SO is well worth looking out. It has some great stories and gets into the production. I can't remember if it was for "Don't give up", but I think it was. Anyhow, for one song they wanted a very muted bass sound, and because Levin came over from the States to the UK for the recording with wife and new baby in tow they had filled out his bass cases with as many "diapiers" (nappies) as they could on the assumption they would not be able to get them in the UK(!!!!!!), which Levin himself laughs at. Anyhow to get the muted bass sound they wanted, they just grabbed a diaper (unused) from the case and put that between the strings and body of his bass. Perfect sound! I love stories like that :)

Sorry to go OT a little, but it is an iconic song from one of the best albums of the 80s and the one that propelled Gabriel into the solo "Big Time".
