Like Derek already stated, Montage has fixed channel assignment to parts (part 1 = ch1, part 2 = ch 2, ...). This can be an issue depending on how you use the board.
The Studiologic SL73 sends out midi messages on up to 4 channels (4 Master zones): so you can eigther play everthing that is set under keyboard control (when MIDI mode hybrid is used) or up to 4 independet parts outside the keyboard control assaignment.
Here is a link to an explanantion of the MoDX/Montage midi setting: https://yamahasynth.com/learn/modx/mast ... -explained

Re: Montage 6 vs Modx6 vs MOXF6 -need advice
Thank you for info and the link. I will read it carefully.
As noted I am a MIDI novice.
I am always simply happy when I can get my hardware Synth/MIDI controller to interact nicely with my DAWs (Sonar and Abelton) and do basic functions like play and record tones from the hardware synth or VSTs on a computer DAW.
The idea that a separate MIDI controller could operate the MODX6 is new to me from this thread, but one I will wish to try down the road if I want a hammer action keyboard.
Thanks.

Re: Montage 6 vs Modx6 vs MOXF6 -need advice
Brief update.
Ended up with a MONTAGE 6 after all was said and done. I tried a used MODX 6 and liked it, but was interested to see if there really was a difference.
Picked up the MONTAGE 6 in a good deal used.
It weights 3X as much and is very well built unit. Keyboard action and feel is similar but a little more solid on the MONTAGE.
No sound difference really IMO.
Overall, happy with it and and keeping the MONTAGE.
Now I need start the learning curve on using it. LOL.

Good to hear. The Montage is better if you can afford it for better build quality, aftertouch, more parts in smooth sound transition, a better control surface, etc.
The MODX is spectacular value of course.
